Switzerland, I love you!

Switzerland, I love you!

My holiday in Switzerland was definitely one of the best holidays I have ever had. I think it was because I went on amazing hikes in the mountains and enjoyed my railway adventures, too. There were, however, some other, really nice places I managed to see.

Although I prefer exploring natural places, there are cities which I really like. Zürich is one of such cities. It’s by a lake of the same name and I tend to love cities located at lakes. Switzerland is a great country when it comes to cities with lakes. I love Swiss lakes so much. And when I was in Zürich the weather was fantastic which surely helped me to like the city. There are a couple of interesting places to see such as the peaceful Lindenhof, the popular Lake promenade or the lovely Chinese garden. Grossmünster and Fraumünster are impressive churches that make the skyline of Zürich so beautiful.

After having visited Zürich, I went to check out the Rhine falls located in the north of Switzerland, near the city of Schaffhausen. Absolutely amazing! They may no be so grand like the Victoria or Niagara falls, but they are just as stunning. You can get super close to the falls and feel how powerful they are.

I went on to visit the city of St. Gallen which boasts the UNESCO listed Abbey of St. Gallen. There is a gorgeous cathedral which you can visit free of charge. What is special about the abbey though is the Abbey Library of Saint Gallen. What a charming place! You are taken back in time to the Medieval times as the library contains many books dating from those times and an old globe, too! And just wandering around the old town of St. Gallen is a nice thing to do because the architecture is beautiful.

Lucerne is another Swiss city located on the shores of a lake. What the city is famous for is the Chapel Bridge. Built in the 14th century, it’ believed to be the oldest wooden bridge in Europe. Apart from that, you can also check out the Spreuer Bridge, another old wooden bridge, the Lion monument or the old city wall. Or simply enjoy walking along the shore of Lucerne lake.

After spending a few days hiking in the Bernese Alps, I took a panoramic train to Montreux. Montreux is a beautiful city at Lake Geneva in the French speaking part of the country. I had fallen in love with Geneva Lake back in 2009, so it felt great to see the lake again. There are not many tourist attractions in Montreux, but I loved it. I loved its vibe. There are two lovely parks where one can chill. It seems like a resort city as there are quite a few luxury hotels there. Montreux reminded me of Monte Carlo or cities on the French Riviera like Nice.

The main reason why I came to Montreux, however, was the Chillon castle (Château de Chillon). It’s an impressive and fascinating medieval castle located on the shore of the lake, too. You can take a train or bus to reach it. Alternatively, you can simply walk along the Riviera promenade while enjoying the views of the lake and mountains in the distance. It takes around 45 minutes to come to the castle.

The last place I wanted to visit in Switzerland was St. Moritz. The price of accommodation was too high tough. And so I stayed elsewhere saving 5O% on a hostel room and I only took a stroll around St. Moritz. You can tale a walk around the beautiful lake, check out the Chesa Futura (the House of Future) or the leaning tower. What is probably the best thing about St. Moritz is that you can go hiking in the surrounding mountains.
