Around Langkawi by bike
After 7 months of travelling I was extremely excited to get to the seaside. To relax. To see the sea. To hear the sea. And to be amazed. Langkawi, an island in Malaysia, was a superb choice. I loved it!
March 4th, 2018 – Cycling day number 1
One of the best days I’ve had lately. I haven’t been as amazed for a while as I was today.I find Langkawi one of the most beautiful places I’ve been to on this trip and it’s becoming my favorite.
I rented a bicycle in the morning so that I could go exploring the island. It was the best bike I have ridden since the beginning of my trip. The owner was German so it makes sense. I biked 17 kilometres to the northwest of the island. There are stunning green mountains covered in jungle.
First I went to take a dip at the Pantai Kok beach. There were barely 10 people out there. The water wasn’t crystal clear but good enough. It was warm, warmer than the water in the shower in my hostel. So it felt like being in a spa. Heaven!
After lunch I biked to Telaga Tujuh (Seven Wells) waterfall. There are pools at the top of the waterfall, presumably seven of them. You can also bathe there. And so I did. The water was cooler than in the sea but not cold. So refreshing! Heaven! The waterfall wasn’t amazing for its power but for the rock it poured down from. Quite unique, I’d say.
And then I took a rather expensive cable car up to the Gunung Mat Chinchang, a mountain peak where there is a sky bridge you can walk over at 55 metres above the jungle. The views from the different viewing platforms as well as the bridge were breathtaking. Heaven!
A close encounter with a new monkey species at a petrol station was a nice bonus. Unfortunately, it seemed to be used to coming there to be fed by people with junk food. Just like the ones at the top, where one was given ice cream.
March 5th, 2018 – Cycling day number 2
I had a bit of ambitious plan today. One of the places I wanted to see today was Gunung Raya, the highest peak on the island (“just” 881 m asl.) But after the adventurous day yesterday, the 50+ km cycling + 4200+ steps climbing + 30+°C temperature combo didn’t appeal to me and I thought better of it.
So I cycled to the north of the island only to find the most beautiful beach of Langkawi – Tanjung Rhu. With every new beach I get to it gets more and more beautiful.
The black sand beach (Pantai Pasir Hitam) wasn’t really nice but with all the boats it made for a nice setting.
